SOCIABLE LAPWING VISITED UZBEKISTAN AGAIN

On September 4, Uzbekistan was once again visited by Sociable Lapwing - one of the rarest birds in the world! This globally threatened bird is comparable in its rarity to such endangered animals as the White rhinoceros, Whale shark, Amur tiger and Giant panda.

Since the beginning of September this year, in coastal area of Talimarzhan reservoir in Kashkadarya region of Uzbekistan, more than three thousand (!)Sociable Lapwings can be observed every day. This is about 25% of all remaining birds of this species in the world.

Sociable Lapwing flew to us from Kazakhstan in the hope of rest before a long and dangerous flight south to Pakistan. According to preliminary estimates, these rare birds will spend more than a month in Uzbekistan. Every day, the number of these birds arriving from Kazakhstan is increasing, and in October on Talimarzhan it will be possible to observe about five thousand Sociable Lapwings - about half of all remaining in the world!

In order to provide better conditions for the endangered Sociable Lapwing in Uzbekistan, the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection is proposed to create a seasonal ornithological sanctuary in the coastal area of Talimarzhan reservoir. To draw attention to this species, members of Uzbekistan Society for the Protection of Birds of have already chosen Sociable Lapwing as the Bird of the Year 2020 in Uzbekistan! We hope that this autumn Sociable Lapwings will leave hospitable Uzbekistan well-fed and contented!
