THE PROTECTION OF BIRDS |
Early in 2010 the Birdfair/RSPB Research Fund for Endangered Birds supported UzSPB project "Numbers and distribution of Saker Falcon and Egyptian Vulture in Uzbekistan". Saker Falcon and Egyptian Vulture are classified as Endangered (EN) by BirdLife International on the 2008 IUCN Red List. They are considered very rare in Uzbekistan, but this status is not based on recent and reliable data. The main aim of this project is to evaluate numbers and distribution of these globally threatened species populations in Uzbekistan as well as potential threats these species are facing. Based on these results Species Conservation Action plans will be developed and a long-term monitoring program, involving volunteer fieldworkers (members of UzSPB), started. The field research will cover Western Tyan Shan and Pamiro-Alay mountains and Kyzylkum Desert.
The project is designed for one year. On April, 2010 expeditions to Western Tyan Shan, Kyzylkum Desert and Southern spurs of Gissar rang were organized. Experienced ornithologists participated in the expeditions together with members of UzSPB student birdwatching clubs.
